Things To See/Do in Honolulu
There are many must-sees in Oahu, but visitors will definitely want to get a close up view of the island’s most famous landmark, Diamond Head, a ‘tuff cone’ which was formed over 100,000 years ago when an eruption of volcanic ash formed into solid rock. According to local legend, the volcano is believed to be the home of Pele, the fire goddess.
It’s the island’s fabulous beaches though that are probably the island’s biggest draw. Visitors are spoilt for choice by the range of 139 beaches, which offer perfect conditions for swimming, soaking up the sunshine and getting active with watersports. The south shore is especially favoured by families, who find the beaches both safe and full of potential for adventures. If you can drag yourself way from the beach for a little while at least, you’ll find a host of wonderful attractions. The Polynesian Cultural Centre on the north shore of the island makes for an excellent excursion. The highlight is definitely the Horizons show, an extravaganza of fiery volcanoes and dramatic special effects.
